MENTISoftware is extending support for its sensitive data discovery technology to SQL Server. With support for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12, PeopleSoft Financials, and PeopleSoft HR through version 6.1.1 released in September 2008, MENTIS continues to expand its offerings to meet the needs of its market.
MENTIS’ pioneering, yet practical data pattern technology helps organizations discover exactly where all of their sensitive information is located and prevent a phenomenon called “data creep”. Data creep is the behind-the-scenes movement and storage of data as a result of everyday use. Complex enterprise applications sometimes create hidden tables or strands of information. In most organizations, there are a number of the relational databases that drive multiple applications and can create unknown locations of data. Given the very nature of the relational database, these locations, and the sensitive data within them multiply geometrically. Add tenacious users, who store data quickly for future use, and it is clear that most organizations do not have an accurate assessment of how far their data has migrated.
Recognizing this vulnerability, MENTIS developed a crawling technology that performs a deep scan in both the expected areas of the database (such as employee, customer, and vendor tables), and the unexpected places (such as descriptive flexfields, other modules, and interface tables). The scan generates a report that includes data locations, the type of information discovered, the number of times it is stored in various locations, etc. The scan itself is flexible and can be customized to meet a particular business or industry need, for instance, patient medical record ID numbers. The subsequent report allows Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) teams to work confidently with IT to set priorities based on the vulnerabilities discovered. GRC teams can then take the appropriate actions to lock down sensitive data through masking, monitoring, and other intrusion prevention techniques.
“We move our customers from the blind spots that complex systems create, to knowing exactly where they stand and what they need to do about it,” said Rajesh Parthasarathy, President & CEO, MENTISoftware. “Our success has been based on our approach of understanding how our customers use their data. Most customers strive to get the most from the information they use, and sometimes this results in sensitive information being stored where it can be exposed. At the same time, our customers don’t need to be bogged down with complicated, time-consuming security solutions. MENTIS enables stakeholders to pinpoint the problems and take a giant step toward compliance within days -- not weeks or months – with products that don’t get in the way of getting the most out of their data. With our data pattern recognition capability, customers can take steps to address serious risk that they didn’t know they had. We are now very pleased to be able to extend this capability to SQL Server customers.”
About MENTISoftware
MENTIS’ preventive and detective strategy automates compliance and security across the database and application architecture. The MENTIS technical engine is innovative and flexible with products that cover production and non-production databases, applications, and custom security architectures. Crawling, masking, monitoring, and access control products work independently or can be used as a complete GRC solution. Out-of-the-box metadata, data classification, a conflict-of-interests library, and security rules allow companies to comply with changing, complex legislation within their industry, automate complex processes, and facilitate collaboration between compliance and technology groups. MENTIS also provides an independent state of security review, which is a quick, yet comprehensive risk and exposure assessment of an organization's database security setup. It includes a gap analysis of current state vs. industry-specific best practices and compliance requirements, and tactical and strategic recommendations to achieve and sustain best practices.
