GRC SIG Best Practices Panel

The GRC SIG will be hosting a panel Thursday, August 12 at 2 p.m. EST. The panel will be responding to questions submitted by the audience. The panel format was well received at the OAUG Collaborate conference in April so the GRC SIG board decided to host a virtual panel. The panel will last for 90 minutes. Participants are encouraged to ask any GRC-related questions related to pre- and post-implementations as well as GRC issues encountered during upgrades. At the end of the webinar, the GRC SIG will also be announcing plans for the GRC SIG meeting to be held at Oracle Open World and soliciting input from attendees.

Psst! Your Sensitive Information is Showing

Can you say with certainty that your organization is protecting all sensitive information in its applications and databases? And that you know all the locations where sensitive information resides . . . AND who has access?

If yours is like most organizations, your answer is likely to be “I’m not sure.” We all know that applications and databases were architected in a more carefree, less security-conscious era. They simply aren’t built to protect data. In fact, they are built to make access to data easier. As a result, data is often stored in handy but undocumented locations. Vendor processes, application users, and developers create further vulnerabilities in your security architecture. With vendors, it may be their behind-the scenes technical processes; with employees and contractors, it may be the need to copy sensitive information into unprotected areas, or to create reports and interfaces with critical information . . . most often, without awareness of compliance issues or appropriate access rights.

Even with an extreme amount of diligence and attention, securing your sensitive information is not an easy task. And it gets harder with each new version, patch or upgrade. Whether you’ve deployed packaged or custom applications, knowing WHERE your information resides is crucial. Thus, documenting the locations and the accessibility of sensitive information across your databases and applications is the critical first step in preventing data breaches and documenting compliance.

Who should attend:

IT Managers, Directors, VPs, Compliance Officers, Security Officers, Internal Auditors, and anyone concerned about protecting sensitive information.

What You Will Learn:

You will learn about the types of sensitive information that need protection, the legislative and industry standards that drive security, and the processes through which organizations inadvertently create points of exposure. Some typical findings from MENTIS customers will demonstrate the surprising variety of unprotected locations to which sensitive information can be propagated. The MENTIS team will present our software platform and discuss how it can help you automate and reduce costs in the identification, protection and management of sensitive information. Chat questions and live Q&A will close the session.

State Privacy Laws: Key Elements of a Successful Compliance Program

The Massachusetts privacy law (201 CMR 17.0), effective March 1, 2010, takes "breach notification” laws a step further. Massachusetts 201 CMR 17 is just the leading edge of a fundamental, international change in privacy legislation – where more comprehensive, far-reaching mandates will impact the way you do business, no matter where you are located.

Forward-thinking organizations worldwide are already meeting the challenges through a set of nimble, scalable software products that are engineered to help them achieve compliance goals . . . and to do so without major disruption to processes or people.

What You Will Learn: Attendees learn more about what to expect from current and prospective privacy legislation (such as 201 CMR 17), how to stay flexible and meet new compliance requirements with ease, and what the key elements are needed for creating an adaptable, durable compliance program, from discovery through remediation.

Mex_Kitchen: Recipe for a Security Nightmare
When sensitive data is propagated into unusual and unexpected – and often unprotected -- areas, the risk of data exposure is high. The situation has all the makings of a nightmare for the company – yet addressing this situation need NOT be a nightmare.

Data creep happens every day through routine internal processes, code development, and, oftentimes, the shortcuts of efficient users. Using real-world case studies, we will highlight actual instances of such sensitive data creep, examine the potential consequences, and discuss what is being done to prevent sensitive data creep.
